What is the title given to USAFA graduates upon commissioning?

Graduates of USAFA receive a commission that gives them officer status in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force. This means the title they hold is “Officer in the United States Air Force or Space Force.” In practice, new officers typically start as Second Lieutenant (the entry rank for officers), wearing officer insignia and stepping into leadership roles. This distinguishes them from enlisted personnel (airmen), federal civilian employees (civil servants), or private contractors, none of whom hold commissioned officer status. The commission is the formal grant of authority to serve as a military officer in the specified branch.
